what a hilarious photograph! this is truly a one in a lifetime shot, the expressions/stances/even the attire of everyone in this photo just add so much. great composition, captures the entire scene and doesn't leave anything out, which is nice especially in this type of photo. there is a strong sense of companionship here. the diversity of people here is also amazing; the guy with that hat just chilling xD, the women in their skirts, the man who looks like he's about to pull a muscle, the naked baby joining in, and even the tiny dog trying to help! i can't think of anything that would make this picture more perfect
I was very, very lucky to take this shot.. I'll tell you the story.. I used to live in Doel for 2 years. Doel is a small beautifull town in Belgium that's threatened by the expansion of the harbor of Antwerp. They want to destroy it and build a large dock. A lot of people had to move allready because life was getting to hard.. for example, there are no more schools and shops in Doel.. People that had business had to stop, a lot of people with children had to move.. Because of all those people who left a lot of good houses stayed empty. So about 2 years ago a lot of squaters came to Doel to life in those houses and to fight for the rights of this forgotten village. This picture was shot on a warm day in Doel.. a friend had bad luck with his camper and needed some help to move it.. For me this picture represents the power of the people in Doel to fight for the right cause.. As one!!!
what an empowering story to go along with the photograph... i really admire the thought that went in to creating the meaning of "As one.." this will be a timeless piece for the people of Doel..it's so sad to hear that they are being pushed out by a larger city . I could only imagine how powerful an image would be if it showed the contrast of the city of Doel with the encroaching Antwerp harbor. thank you for sharing this story it must mean a lot to you! in turn you have made it mean that much more to me. very powerful indeed
